CNN Chief International Correspondent Christiane Amanpour ventures inside North Korea as the New York Philharmonic makes a historic visit to one of the world's most closed societies. In NOTES FROM NORTH KOREA, Amanpour examines the tense standoff with the United States over nuclear weapons and reports on the long history of mistrust between the two nations. Amanpour gets a rare look inside the notorious top-secret nuclear facility at Yongbyon, where she witnesses the dismantling of equipment used to extract plutonium for nuclear weapons. Although trailed by official government minders, Amanpour is given rare access to hear directly from ordinary Koreans - in their homes and on the streets - about their adoration for their "Dear Leader" - North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il - and their suspicions and fears about the United States. In a rare interview conducted before Amanpour travelled to North Korea, Ambassador Christopher Hill, the chief U.S. nuclear negotiator with North Korea, shares his hopes for the philharmonic's trip and offers insight into the nuclear negotiations. New York Philharmonic president and executive officer Zarin Mehta also reveals the complex negotiations that led to the unprecedented trip. The concert broke new ground. North Korean officials told Amanpour that the playing of the American national anthem in North Korea was a political breakthrough. The final encore of the program, a famous Korean folk song, brought the audience to its feet in an emotional display of appreciation for the musicians. The one-hour documentary includes an exclusive meeting with North Korea's chief nuclear negotiator, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Kim Gye Gwan, and interviews with former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright; Lisa Kim, a native South Korean and a violinist in the New York Philharmonic and Lorin Maazel, New York Philharmonic conductor.
