CNN OPENS THIRD NEWSGATHERING OPERATION IN INDIA

Mumbai operation part of network's international content ownership strategy

As part of CNN's international newsgathering expansion and content ownership strategy, the network today announced the opening of its third editorial operation in Mumbai, India, as well as the appointment of Mallika Kapur, currently a London-based reporter, as the network's Mumbai-based international correspondent effective immediately.

"Owning and creating content is growing our business, on television, online, with affiliates and on new digital platforms," said Parisa Khosravi, senior vice president of CNN International newsgathering. "India has one of the fastest growing economies in the world and it makes sense for us to have a correspondent in Mumbai that can report for both our news and business programs."

The expansion into Mumbai, India's financial capital, will support current CNN newsgathering operations in New Delhi and Chennai to develop the network's coverage in India, which is a nuclear power with population of over a billion people. Mallika Kapur will join the network's existing two correspondents in India - Sara Sidner in New Delhi and Liz Neisloss in Chennai.

Kapur started with CNN in 2001 as an assistant producer and quickly promoted to an anchor and correspondent, covering a wide range of business and news stories in London production center. In her new position, Kapur has already started to report from the financial market in Mumbai, as part of the network's coverage on the global reaction towards U.S economic rescue plans.

The new position in Mumbai is part of the multi-million dollar investment that CNN announced last year which has already seen the hiring of an additional 50 staff including 12 new correspondents based in a total of 43 new and existing CNN editorial operations around the world. New operations are also planned for Kabul, Afghanistan, Santiago (Chile).
