But for Kevin Spacey, a new challenge in the world of Chinese cinema is just another chapter in an eventful career. Since his breakthrough roles in "The Usual Suspects" and "American Beauty", the Oscar-winner has managed to remain on the Hollywood A-list while pursuing his passion for the theatre. This week's Talk Asia meets the versatile performer on the set of "Inseparable" as he tells host Anjali Rao about his latest adventure in Asia and beyond. "Inseparable" marks the first Chinese film production featuring an A-list Hollywood star. Spacey, who plays a mysterious expat living in Guangzhou who befriends a young engineer with problems at work and at home, explains why he wants to do this movie: "Firstly, Dayyan Eng who's the director and also the writer is an incredibly talented young emerging filmmaker. The story struck me as very genuine, very modern, addressed lots of issues and problems in a very clever...very funny way." He also speaks highly of co-star Daniel Wu, a well-established Hong Kong actor who plays the troubled engineer in the movie: "I think he is a remarkable young actor and from the second I got here it's been like family. We've had some pretty remarkable experiences - lots and lots of laughter on set and in the experience of doing it." Despite Beijing's restrictions on imports of foreign films, the U.S. actor believes that the country with over 1.3 billion people will be the next place to be for movies and actors: "Ever since I've got here, I've been reading stories about other actors that are in discussions about coming...This kind of exchange of a western actor coming to make a Chinese film is a very exciting step." Spacey started his career on stage, moving to TV and eventually to film. He has taken home two Oscars within a short timeframe after winning Best Supporting Actor for ‘The Usual Suspects' and Best Actor for ‘American Beauty'. He recalls a funny off-stage conversation with the late actor Jack Lemmon after receiving his second Oscar: "He was very upset because he won the supporting actor Oscar in 1954. He didn't win again until 1972. He said ‘You did it in four years! you son of a...'" The versatile actor returned to theatre at the height of his career and he explains to Rao why he decided to become Artistic Director of "The Old Vic Theatre" in London. "Despite the fact that I'd had success in film, theatre was always my primary allegiance. Movies came very late in my life and the opportunity that arose at the Old Vic Theatre in London to come and start a theatre director was so inviting to me personally and challenging to me professionally that I just couldn't pass it up."
