They may have spent two and a half decades as movers and shakers in Japan 's music business, but rock duo Chage and Aska tell TALK ASIA's Lorraine Hahn that there is still much to do. “There are still a lot of things that seem new to me, things that we have not done. 26 years have passed very quickly and I have always felt that there are many things that we have not achieved,” Aska says.

One such goal for the group is to break in to the American and European markets. However, even these Japanese music pioneers admit it is a challenge. “Our handicap is that we, Chage and Aska, are more focused on lyrics than melody. And we sing in Japanese. In western counties, it is important to sing in English. But the world is getting smaller. If Asian baseball players can go to the US and play well, maybe the same thing can happen for us in music. I could be wrong, but my instinct tells me it will happen,” Chage says.

Still, this band is open to the idea of trying new things. Recently, Chage and Aska, along with other Japanese music celebrities, took a lead role in offering their music for sale on a popular online music store. “I think we've reached a new era in the music industry. It's not only about i-tunes. We are entering an era of digital distribution. Every trend that starts, has to end. It's no use jumping on something when it's about to end. The way to go is to follow the flow, and do what's best for the people who want to listen to our music,” Aska says.
