He became a national hero in Japan with his down to earth approach playing for the Yomiuri Giants, before signing a three year contract with the New York Yankees in 2003 - and then another four year for US$52 million in 2006. Despite a couple of major injuries and tough New York fans, he tells CNN's Maggie Lake he enjoys his life with the Yankees and in the United States. Talk Asia gauges the opinion of fans towards Matsui on game day and explores a restaurant chain created in his honour - as the man himself discusses his career, his favourite players and life off the field. TUESDAY Rinko Kikuchi She stunned global cinema audiences with her controversial and Oscar nominated performance as a lonely deaf girl in the film Babel. Rinko Kikuchi is one of Japan's hottest young actresses and models, recently working with Karl Lagerfeld as the new face of Channel. Despite her success, she remains an unconventional figure in Japan, at odds with the traditional demure image of woman and forging a career on her own terms. Talk Asia follows her on a modelling assignment, discusses how her life has changed since Babel and revisits the unique location of one of the film's most important scenes.
WEDNESDAY Yohji Yamamoto One of the world's great fashion designers, Yohji Yamamoto has helped blaze a trail for Asia over the last three decades. Talk Asia tours one of his ateliers and showrooms in Tokyo, before moving to Paris for Fashion Week, where Yamamoto opens the doors to a model casting session for the first time. Known for his distinctive black, mimimalistic style, he discusses how he perceives his own impact on fashion, his ethos behind running a business empire and how he practices Karate to relax.
THURSDAY Kenji Kasahara Mixi is the biggest social networking site (SNS) in Japan with more than 10 million users and a grip on popular culture. Founder Kenji Kasahara started up his first company when he still was a student at Tokyo University and then set up Mixi in 2004. Although it exploded into a company which recently listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, he remains low-key about his staggering success at a young age. Talk Asia follows him at work discussing his impact on Japanese culture and vision for the future of the internet, before taking him back to his roots at the world-famous business school at Tokyo University . FRIDAY Ichikawa Ebizo XI He's a youth icon in Japan seeking to take the ancient art of Kibuki theatre into the modern age. Born into one of the most prestigeous kabuki dynasties, Ichikawa Ebizo began his career at the age of six and became a star with his mixture of athletic ability and enigmatic personal image. Talk Asia gets unprecedented backstage access to Ichikawa as he prepares for a spectacular performance, discussing his life in the media glare and how he felt the pull of destiny in pursuing a career in Kabuki.

Japan Now week Guests in order of appearance: MONDAY: Ken Hirai In a country better known for its pop and rock music, Ken Hirai’s soulful voice and smooth R&B tunes stand out. The Osaka native began his music career with Sony Music in the early 90s following a successful audition when he was still a student. He’s not known as a prolific artist, but one who takes his craft very seriously. He was even the first Japanese to appear on amateur night at New York’s famous Apollo Theatre, widely regarded as a true test of talent for R&B singers. Hirai joins Talk Asia to discuss his 10th anniversary in the business, and the future of soul and R&B in Japan. TUESDAY: Kotooshu In Japan where Sumo is an intrinsic part of the country’s culture and tradition, one European has taken the sport by storm. Kotooshu was born in Bulgaria and developed an interest in wrestling and sumo after watching an amateur tournament in Europe. He made his way to Japan without speaking the language, and put himself through a gruelling apprenticeship. But following his debut in November 2002 he rose rapidly to reach the second-highest level in the sumo ranking system -- faster than anyone in half a century. He is popular and good looking, but things haven’t always been easy for him in Japan. Kotooshu reveals to Talk Asia the challenges he’s faced as a foreigner in a traditional sport. WEDNESDAY: Shigeru Miyamoto Shigeru Miyamoto is the creative force behind Nintendo, and is widely regarded as one of the fathers of modern video gaming. An avid reader of manga (Japanese comics), Miyamoto was employed by Nintendo as an artist in the early 80s, tasked with designing arcade games. But the success of Donkey Kong and Mario catapulted him into instant fame among gaming enthusiasts. Miyamoto is known for designing refined control-mechanics and for creating imaginative worlds where players are encouraged to think and make discoveries. In an interview with Talk Asia, Miyamoto reveals the inspiration behind his ideas, and explains how the new Wii console will revolutionize the way people play games. The challenge was issued – can Anjali Rao beat Miyamoto at his own game? THURSDAY: Tadao Ando Tadao Ando has been credited as a Japanese architect whose works possess an ‘indelible timelessness and universality.’ He is known for his minimalist buildings and use of concrete and light. And he is the only architect to have won the discipline's four most prestigious prizes -- the Pritzker, Carlsberg, Praemium Imperiale, and Kyoto Prize. As a self-taught architect, Ando attributes his development to extensive reading and frequent travels around Europe and the United States. He gives Talk Asia a tour of one of his most famous works - the ‘Church of Light’ in Osaka - and tells us why his buildings stand the test of time…and earthquakes. FRIDAY: Ayumi Hamasaki Ayumi Hamasaki is arguably one of the most prolific and influential female pop singers in Asia. So popular is she in Japan, that she’s been dubbed "the Empress of J-Pop.” Her influence extends beyond music to fashion – her image sells products and her frequent makeovers often dictate what’s trendy in a city known for its trendy youth. In 2006, Ayu (as she is known to fans) became the first female singer to have 27 number 1 singles. regular weekend air times of Talk Asia will be a special edition with highlights from the five special shows listed above.
