#7: Quincy Jones' Seattle

Quincy Delight Jones Junior has had a remarkable five decade-long career in the music business. Now, the 75-year-old is returning a few favors - passing on to youngsters some of the wisdom, wit and wildness he's acquired over the years.

CNN's "My City_My Life" tags along as Quincy returns to Seattle, the U.S. city where he spent his teenage years. It's where he learnt to dream - of a future that's turned out brighter than he could ever have imagined.

Jones has earned a record 70 Grammy Award nominations, 27 Grammys, seven Oscar nominations, an Emmy, the world-renowned Legion d'Honneur and countless other honorary degrees and accolades. He's best known as the producer of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album, which has sold 104 million copies worldwide, and as the producer and conductor of the charity song "We are the World."

Jones was born in 1933, during the Great Depression, in Chicago's South Side ghetto. As a youngster, he battled gang-infested streets and witnessed his schizophrenic mother being taken away in a straitjacket. His father later remarried and moved his new blended family to Seattle in the Pacific North-West.

This is the city where he discovered music, which, with its color and emotion, became his surrogate mother. Quincy played trumpet in a school band and sang in a gospel group and then discovered Seattle's lively jazz nightclub scene - hanging out with the likes of Ray Charles and backing up the great Billie Holiday and Billy Eckstine.

Quincy's humble start doesn't compare to his luxurious life now in Los Angeles - but it's been quite a journey. From flamboyant bebopper, Quincy went on to shuffle pop, soul, hip-hop, jazz, classical into many dazzling fusions. He's travelled the world, made millions and had a colorful personal life. Yet, success has not ruined Quincy. He's truly modest, full of fun, deeply protective of his family and friends and extremely thankful for the opportunities he got "way back in the day"...in Seattle.
